A personal motivation for becoming an owner is diversity and inclusion. I had been in the industry going on 8 years while working for a great local company here in Cincinnati. Our division’s success helped us achieve a prestigious National award for roofing. While attending the ceremony in Los Angeles I noticed that I was pretty much the only African American attendee present in a room of thousands of contractors. This wasn’t a new experience or feeling being from the Midwest but with the ceremony being a nationwide event I definitely thought it was odd to see but I kinda just brushed it off and took in the humbling experience. The very next year we won the award again, this time with the ceremony being held in Austin Texas with the same lack of representation I had seen the previous year. This time I decided to ask one of the higher ups and president of a national brand why there is such a huge disparity in diversity?? His answer was less than inspiring, 25 years in the industry and this is just what it is he said. Once the ceremony was completed there was a cocktail hour in the lobby of the venue at which time I was approached by a random gentleman who extended his hand in a congratulatory manner and proceeded to ask me if I was the owner? When I responded no he took his hand back and said to well you ain’t S*** then and walked away, it was at that moment a fire was ignited in my soul to take my journey to another level. Becoming an owner had nothing to do with any financial goals, it was all about inclusion and representation. Giving people who had never been exposed to this industry an opportunity to gain the knowledge and power to change their lives forever.
