Homer Bailey's Contract Shouldn't Matter Anymore.

This was originally published in The Athletic....

Let’s talk about Homer Bailey’s arm.

It is a well-worn limb, an appendage that at one point was a symbol of hope that ended up never being fully realized.

Bailey’s arm, along with the rest of his body, arrived here almost 11 years ago, months before Joey Votto and his bat made the trek from Louisville to Cincinnati. Of all the big-league debuts made by Reds prospects before the franchise started winning again, none was accompanied with as much hype as Homer’s first big-league start on June 8, 2007.

That arm threw five decent innings that night against the Indians at Great American Ballpark, and while it wouldn’t stay in Cincinnati for good – Homer and his arm were sent back to AAA Louisville a month later – we saw enough in those first few starts to daydream about what that arm could do when it was ready to stay.

Turns out, we’ve never really gotten to find out.
