Residents in the coastal city gathered Sunday afternoon to mark the 53-year anniversary of the November 12, 1970 exploding whale incident. Neighbors said they know their community will always be remembered by the botched disposal of a sperm whale that washed ashore on a Florence beach, ultimately finding its way into popular culture over the years.
