Jays 10 Reds 3
In his first ML start since June 17, Hunter Greene was beaten like a drum by the Blue Jays in a 10-3 loss Sunday afternoon at GABP. Honestly, it was painful to watch. The Jays clobbered five home runs and racked up 9 runs in his 3+ innings of work.
The game felt doomed from jump. The Reds were a defensive train wreck in a two error/one misplay 1st inning. They committed four errors on the day.....all by the rookie infield.
Next: The Reds will try to regroup as they head out for a 10-game West Coast road trip vs the Angles, Giants, Diamondbacks and Hurricane Hillary.
Greene: 3+ IN, 10 H, 9 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 90 pitches/62 strikes. All stakes and things considered, it was pretty disheartening. He allow nine extra-base hits: 3 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR. He was ripped for five extra-base hits in the 2nd inning, including two two-run homers. He then allowed three more homers and two walks before he was done without recording an out in the 4th. The Jays hit six balls at 100 mph+. They even fouled off 24 of his 62 pitches that were strikes.
Messy: Tom Emanski had to shed a tear and grab a drink. Each team made two errors in the first two innings and combined for six. TJ Friedl mistimed his leap and missed a 1st inning triple by Bo Bichette. Then, Matt McLain didn't get in front of a grounder with the infield in that plated the first run and Noelvi Marte threw wide on a grounder/force attempt at 2nd for an error. Elly De La Cruz bounced a DP throw for an E in the 6th inning and booted another in the 8th.
Punchless: Three game series produced 7 runs, 17 hits and 32 K. They scored in just four of the 27 innings.
Start Me Up! Marte got his first MLB start, manning 3B. He went 1 for 4.....hustling a single into a double.
Leading man: Stuart Fairchild hit leadoff for the first time in his MLB career. He entered with a .361 OBP vs LHP this year. He had to leave the game after banging into the wall making a 1st inning catch (concussion protocol). TJ Hopkins replaced him.
Streaker: CES singled to extend his hitting streak to five games.
In a pinch: Tyler Stephenson hit a pinch-hit homer in the 7th inning.......entering the game he'd homered just once since July 3. He replaced Luke Maile after he took a foul tip off his facemask.
Bullpen: Farmer 2.0 IN (20 pitches)......Moll 1.0 IN (16 pitches), Law 2.0 IN (22 pitches)......that's 12 consecutive scoreless appearances for Law/15.0 IN, 3 H. Young 1.0 IN, R (14 pitches). Actually, allowing a couple of more runs would have allowed the Reds to pitch a position player to save an arm.
Nice job Alexandra Kiefaber with God Bless America 👏
How the Reds scored:
2nd: Steer and CES scored on a throwing error after Marte fly out.
7th: Stephenson PH HR, 9-2 Reds
