Reds: When you dumpster dive, it should be no surprise your bullpen stinks

The Reds bullpen was forced into covering 18 outs last night following Sonny Gray's injury departure.

Actually, the results were not as bad as I anticipated. Which shows you the current state of the pen:

6 IN, 5 R, HR, 2 WP, 9 BB and 116 pitches by five different relievers.

Two pitches into the pen last night Sean Doolittle had thrown a gopher ball and the game was tied.

Update: The bullpen ERA climbed to a league worst 5.82, approaching a half run worse than the next closest team (Rockies 5.42).

Reds relievers have served up a ML high 37 homers and somehow are only 2nd in most walks 134).

The bullpen has authored the following performances since last Tuesday night:

Tuesday, June 1 vs Phillies: 13 R, 4.1 IN, 12 H, 5 BB, 5 HR, 84 pitches

Sunday, June 6 vs Cardinals: 7 R, 4.0 IN, 10 H, HR, 92 pitches

Tuesday, June 8 vs Brewers: 5 R, 6.0 IN, 5 H, 9 BB, HR, 2 WP, 116 pitches

I thought Nick Krall's quote to Bobby Nightengale (Enquirer) was very telling:

“You’re going to win some and you’re going to lose some when you’re just betting on the waiver claims."

How about that admission? That's throwing up your hands and saying, "Hey Bob, what did you think would happen when you told me to cut payroll, get rid of Raisel Iglesias and Archie Bradley and not spend to replace them?"

Consider where the Reds found some of their relievers and the production offered this season:

Michael Feliz: Designated for assignment by Pirates. Claimed by Reds May 14. 16.20 ERA. Currently on IL.

Carson Fulmer: From July 23, 2020 to March, 2021, was designated for assignment by White Sox, Tigers, Orioles and Pirates. Claimed by Reds March 21. Designated for assignment by Reds with 6.66 ERA. But hey, he's back at Louisville and likely will get another spin on the wheel of fresh arms.

Cam Bredrosian: Outrighted off Angels roster October, 2020. Signs minor league contract with Reds February 16, 2021. Released by Reds with 11.12 ERA.

Noeh Ramirez: Acquired from Angels in exchange for Raisel Iglesias. Released by Reds in Spring Training.

Cionel Perez: Acquired from Astros January 23, 2021. Promoted and demoted by Reds four times this season. ERA 8.31.

Ashton Goudeau: Designated for assignment by Rockies April 29, 2021. Claimed off waivers by Reds May 22. 23 strikes in 40 pitches and 4 BB/2 IN last night.

Sean Doolittle: Signed as a free agent. Has allowed 11 of 13 inherited runners to score this season.

You get what you pay for: The worst bullpen in MLB
