Bengals: Another loss

Ravens 23 Bengals 17

Bengals kick returner Brandon Wilson opened the game with a 92-yard kickoff return for touchdown. But Andy Dalton's two-yard touchdown keeper with 1:28 left in the game was the Bengals only offensive touchdown on another root-canal feeling day that produced just 250 yards in total offense.

In between it all, Ravens QB Lamar Jackson toyed with the Bengals defense, rushing for 152 yards and passing for 236 yards. He became the first player in the Super Bowl era to top 200 yards passing and 150 yards rushing in the same game and the fourth QB in NFL history to rush for at least 150 yards.

The Bengals drop to 0-6 and have now lost 15 of their last 17 following Sunday' 23-17 loss in Baltimore.

Dalton's TD cut the deficit to 23-17 but the Bengals on-side kick attempted failed and the game was over. But it never felt close and it was difficult to watch.

The Ravens possessed the ball for nearly 40 minutes, racking up nearly 500 yards: 269 rushing/236 passing.....6.5 yards per play. 9 of 15 (60%) 3rd down.

The Bengals have allowed 535 yards rushing the last two games: 266 vs Cards. 269 vs Ravens.

Leading 20-10 in the 4th quarter the Ravens executed a soul stealing, blood draining, manhood sapping 18 play/83 yard drive to erase 9:46 from the clock and add a FG to make it 23-10. The gas tank read 'E' for the Bengals defense.

It was easy-peasy, up and down the field, roaming through wide-open-spaces for the Ravens much of the day. Yet the Bengals defense, on the field for 77 plays and 39:42, allowed just 23 points, including just two field goals over the final 44:48 of the game.

Jackson had two rushes for 57 yards on the opening drive and 111 rushing yards and 168 passing yards at the half.

Baltimore TE's: 9 catches for 121 yards on 13 targets.

Carl Lawson recorded his first sack of the season. Josh Tupou continues to make positive plays. Geno Atkins did not register any stats for his 61 snaps.

A Wilson forced fumble/Nick Vigil recovery led to the Bengals adding a FG before the half to cut the deficit to 17-10.

55 plays for 20:18 time of possession. 250 net yards, 4.5 yards per play. Just three possessions in the second half.

Alex Erickson rushed for more yards (17) on a jet sweep than Joe Mixon and Gio Bernard combined to rush for on the day (12 times for 14 yards). Bernard was involved in a jet-sweep and a couple of screens in his six touches: 4 rushes/4 yards, 2 catches/20 yards on 3 targets.

The last time the Bengals scored a first half offensive TD was Week 2 vs SF. They have not scored an offensive TD in the first three quarters of a game for three straight weeks. The offense has scored 39 first half points in six games.

Dalton did not have a completion in the first quarter (0 for 4). He made several poor throws, including a bad read/pass on an interception and a throw high and behind Erickson in the back of the endzone. He found a rhythm in the 3rd quarter and wound up: 21 of 39, 235 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT, 61.4 rating. He was not sacked until 3:12 remained in the game.

The Bengals lone offensive bright spot was Auden Tate: 5 catches for 91 yards. He made a sweet diving catch, a heck of a leaping catch and a couple of catches on back-shoulder throws.

Trailing 17-7 late in the first half, the Bengals had 1st and goal from the five yard line. After two runs netted two yards, Dalton missed Erickson in the back of the endzone. Zac Taylor opted to settle for a FG. Weak. And I have no idea how/why Tyler Eifert was blocking on first down and not on the field on third down in that sequence.

The Ravens focused on Tyler Boyd: 3 catches (10 yards) on 7 targets. Drew Sample caught a pass....for -1 yard.

The OL shuffle continued: John Jerry started at LT. RG John Miller left with an injury in the 2nd quarter, replaced by Alex Redmond.

Special Teams:

Wilson's KR TD was the first for the Bengals in 157 games, since Bernard Scott in 2009.

Randy Bullock launched a kickoff out of bounds and the Bengals were called for offsides on the kick.

1st quarter stats: Bengals outgained 212-6, outrushed 106-6 and out firstdowned 11-0.

Wilson (S) and Germaine Pratt (LB) got starts.

The Bengals have losses by 1, 3, 4 and 6.

Dre Kirkpatrick left on a cart after injury his ankle in the first quarter and did not return.

Still not sure why Taylor didn't challenge when the Ravens TE was ruled down, but appeared to fumble while on top of Preston Brown. Earlier, Taylor lost a timeout when he called a non-pass interference call against the Baltimore defense.

The Bengals have recorded just seven sacks in six games and allowed 22.

The Bengals and Dolphins are the only winless teams remaining in the NFL. They meet December 22 in Miami.
