Indians hand Reds another one run loss, 2-1 in 10 innings

Indians 2 Reds 1 (10 innings)

Oscar Mercado lined a one-out game winning single off Raisel Iglesias with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th to beat the Reds 2-1 Tuesday night.

The Reds fall to 29-36 overall and 9-14 in one-run games. Iglesias suffers his 6th loss of the season (1-6). He had not allowed a run since May 5, covering 12 consecutive scoreless appearances.

The Reds managed just seven hits, left nine runners on base, struck out 10 times and suffered their 24th loss by two runs or fewer this season.

With Luis Castillo and Trevor Bauer on the mound it figured to be a pitcher's duel Tuesday night in Cleveland. It was......and then some.

Castillo: 6 IN, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K. 109 pitches/64 strikes. He really labored (38 pitches) in escaping a 6th inning bases loaded jam.

His ERA drops to 2.20 and 1.92 in his last 19 starts dating back to last season. The Reds are now 7-7 in his 14 starts.

Bauer: 7.2 IN, 6 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 6 K. 118 pitches/76 strikes.

The game was scoreless into the bottom of the 4th inning when Carlos Santana rocketed a shot over the wall in right field for a 1-0 Indians lead. Tyler Naquin doubled and went to third on a Castillo wild pitch with one out. But Castillo buckled down and escaped the jam.

The Reds drew even in the 5th when Jose Iglesias singled on an 0-2 pitch and then scored on a double by Nick Senzel. 1-1. Senzel has a double in 9 of his last 14 games and 11 in his 34 games.

After walking back-to-back batters (first of the night), Castillo found himself in a bases loaded, one out jam in the 6th inning. But he struck out Jose Ramirez swinging on a change-up and got Jake Bauers looking on a slider (109th pitch) to end the threat.

The Reds loaded the bases vs Bauer in the 7th inning with a Yasiel Puig double and one out walks to Iglesias and Tucker Barnhart. But Senzel grounded back to the mound for a 1-2-3 DP to end the inning.

Bauer was done in the 8th when he walked Derek Dietrich with two outs. Kyle Farmer delivered a pinch-hit infield single vs LH Oliver Perez. But Puig flew out to right field vs RH Nick Wittgren..

The Reds missed chances early with runners in scoring position. Joey Votto was stranded after a one-out double in the 1st and Josh VanMeter struck out with two-outs and runners on the corners in the 4th.

7th inning: Michael Lorenzen, 0 R, K

8th inning/9th inning: David Hernandez, 0 R, 5 K, He struck out the side in the 9th facing three left-handed batters.

The Reds are now 2-5 in extra-innings.
