Reds hit, walk and.....bunt their way past Braves 7-6

Trailing 4-3 in the sixth inning, the Reds scored four runs in the game deciding inning and then hung on to beat the Braves 7-6 Tuesday night at GABP.

The Reds have won 4 of their last 5 and stand 9-13 on the season. They are 8-5 since the 1-8 start.

Seven different Reds batters scored, seven collected a total of nine hits and six drew at least one walk on a nine walk night.

The Reds offense gave Sonny Gray a 3-0 lead through four innings courtesy of the long ball, then the defense played a role in giving that lead up.

Yasiel Puig hit a lightning bolt two-run homer in the first inning after a Jesse Winker single. 2-0 Reds

Tucker Barnhart extended the lead with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. 3-0 Reds

Gray struck out the side in the first inning and rolled through the first five innings, allowing one run and striking out nine.

But the Braves got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Dansby Swanson tripled and Ender Inciarte lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. 3-1 Reds

The wheels came off for Gray in the sixth inning. Jesse Winker ran a long way but could not get to a Josh Donaldson ski high fly down the left field line that bounced past him for an RBI double. Freddie Freeman then doubled in the tying run. Eugenio Suarez was charged with an error on a Ronald Acuna infield single. Gray threw a wild pitch. Nick Markakis lifted a sacrifice fly and the Braves had their first lead of the game. Gray was done, having retired just one batter in the inning. 4-3 Braves

Gray: 5.1 IN, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 9 K.....88 pitches/59 strikes.

Robert Stephenson took over for Gray in the sixth inning and struck out the two batters he faced, both on nasty sliders.

The Reds regained the lead while batting around in a wild sixth inning: 4 R, 4 BB, 2 H, E, SF. Jose Iglesias reached on an error. Derek Dietrich bunted for a hit against the shift. Jose Peraza lined a two-run double and the Reds led 5-4. Phillip Ervin pinch-hit for Winker with one out and drew a bases loaded walk to bring home another run. 6-4 Reds. Puig lifted a sac fly. 7-4 Reds

Charlie Culberson's pinch-hit double cut the Reds lead to 7-5 in the 7th inning. It was the first run Wandy Peralta has allowed in his 10th appearance of season.David Hernandez relieved and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. The Braves made it 7-6 in the 8th inning on a Swanson double vs Jared Hughes. 7-6 Reds Amir Garrett entered with the tying run on third base and induced a ground out on the first pitch to end the threat.

Raisel Iglesias allowed a leadoff double in the ninth inning, snapping his streak of nine consecutive strikeouts. Ozzie Albies popped up a bunt attempt. Donaldson blasted one to the track in left-center-field that center fielder Michael Lorenzen tracked, calmly called off Ervin and hauled in. Freeman then grounded out to first to end it.

Reds pitchers recorded 14 strikeouts, while Braves pitchers recorded 11.

Bell used six relievers. Stephenson picked up the win.

Joey Votto returned after missing two games with a back issue: K, single, BB, BB, BB

Puig had a homer, single, sac fly and three RBI. Jose Iglesias had a two hit night. Scott Schebler had a rough night with four K's.
