A hospital in Maryland reported a woman to the authorities, alleging she had opiates in her system and now the woman is sharing her story. This past spring Elizabeth Eden was at the hospital and in labor when the doctor came into the room and told her that she had tested positive for opiates and that he had reported her to the state. It turns out that Eden had a poppy seed bagel for breakfast that day. Poppy seeds come from the poppy plant and opium is made from the sap from that plant. All it takes is for someone to consume just a teaspoon of poppy seeds to falsely test positive for drugs. Eden says her baby had to stay in the hospital for five days while a case-worker investigated. In the end her poppy seed defense was accepted and the case-worker closed the file.
