President Trump is commuting the sentence of Alice Johnson. The 63-year-old woman was serving a life sentence in jail on non-violent drug charges from the 1990s. The decision was announced this morning after a meeting between Trump and Kim Kardashian West last week. The reality star had been working to free Johnson from prison. In a tweet, West said this is the "BEST NEWS EVER!!!!"
In a statement, the White House said "Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behavior and has been a model prisoner." The White House adds while the Trump administration has been tough on crime, "It believes that those who have paid their debt to society and worked hard to better themselves while in prison deserve a second chance."
So grateful to @realDonaldTrump, Jared Kushner & to everyone who has showed compassion & contributed countless hours to this important moment for Ms. Alice Marie Johnson. Her commutation is inspirational & gives hope to so many others who are also deserving of a second chance.— Kim Kardashian West (@KimKardashian) June 6, 2018
