Police Dog Finds Roasted Pig In Passenger's Luggage

A beagle from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s K-9 unit made an odd discovery in the luggage of a traveler from Ecuador last week. As the passenger's luggage was being screened by customs officials at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the dog alerted its handler that it found something in the bag.

When officials opened the bag they were shocked to discover a two-pound roasted pig head wrapped in aluminum foil. Authorities confiscated and destroyed the pig, which they said could inadvertently bring diseases into the United States.

“Our best defense against destructive pests and animal diseases is to prevent the entry of prohibited agriculture products from entering the United States,” CBP Area Port Director for the Port of Atlanta Carey Davis told Fox Atlanta. “This seizure at ATL illustrate the tremendous expertise of our four-legged K-9 partners in protecting the United States."

Travelers are prohibited from bringing pork or pork products into the United States over concerns the meat could be tainted with swine fever or foot and mouth disease. Anybody bringing food into the country is required to declare the items on their customs form so agents can inspect it upon arrival.

Officials did not say whether the unidentified passenger faced any charges for smuggling the pig into the country.
