Maryland Police Officer Accused Of Raping Woman During Traffic Stop

A Maryland police officer has been arrested and charged with raping a woman after he pulled her over for a traffic violation. Officials said that Ryan Macklin stopped the woman and then forced her "to perform a sexual act while they were both seated in her car."

Authorities believe there could be other victims and have suspended Macklin without pay. The Prince George’s County Police Department released a statement saying that "the charges against this officer are highly troubling."

"Officers take an oath to protect others, not to abuse their authority in order to victimize someone. Those who live and work in Prince George’s County deserve the very best from the men and women of this department,” said Chief Hank Stawinski.

Authorities released surveillance camera footage from a nearby furniture store which shows Macklin activating the lights on his police cruiser as he pulls the woman over. The victim's name was not released but NBC Washington reports that she is an undocumented immigrant, though investigators do not believe that was the reason that Macklin targeted the woman.

Macklin was charged with first-degree rape, second-degree rape, perverted practice, second-degree assault, and fourth-degree sex offense.
