'Smallville' Actress Allison Mack Arrested On Sex Trafficking Charges

'Smallville' star Allison Mack has been arrested on charges of sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy, and forced labor conspiracy for her role as an alleged "slave master" and helping recruit women into the cult-like group named Nxivm (prounced NEX-ium). Mack was best known as Clark Kent's friend and confidant "Chloe" on the CW's "Smallville."

According to a statement from the Department of Justice, Keith Raniere (also known as 'Vanguard'), the founder of Nxivm, promoted his group as a self-help improvement course, but the truth was far darker. Mack "recruited women to join what was purported to be a female mentorship group that was, in fact, created and led by Keith Raniere," US Attorney Richard P. Donoghue said in the statement. "The victims were then exploited, both sexually and for their labor, to the defendant's benefit."

The 35-year-old Mack served as Raniere's direct 'slave' as well serving as a master to the other women they had convinced to join their group. If women wanted to join Nxivm, they were allegedly instructed by Mack to take blackmail-worthy photos and give them incriminating statements. Recruits would also be also forced to pose naked for the camera, cut down on their eating, take part in 'readiness' drills that left them without much sleep, among other demands.

A statement on the Nxivm website says they are working with authorities to clear their founder's name.

"In response to the allegations against our founder, Keith Raniere, we are currently working with the authorities to demonstrate his innocence and true character. We strongly believe the justice system will prevail in bringing the truth to light."
