Sunflower seeds, gum, and towels, Yep it's almost game time.  The first Spring Training broadcast is just 2 days away.   Marty and the Cowboy will be behind the mics as the Reds take on (surprise, surprise) the Cleveland Indians.  Air time on 700 WLW is 3:25 on Wednesday.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:05.

It's been awhile..

It has been 8,528 days since the Reds last won a World Series game (Oct 20,1990 vs the Oakland A's) and 6,716 days since the Reds won a playoff series (Oct 6, 1995 vs the L.A. Dodgers).  Is this the year the Reds break one of those streaks?  Only time will tell.

Devin is the Main Man..

Manager Bryan Price announced last week that Devin Mesoraco is the Reds number 1 catcher this season.  So what exactly does that exactly mean.  Mesoraco was behind the plate for 97 games in 2013.  How high will that total be in 2014?  Baltimore's number 1 catcher, Matt Wieters caught 140 last season but if Reds history is any indication, Mesoraco won't approach that number.  It would be somewhat of a rarity in fact if he caught 120 games.  Here are some interesting numbers dating back to the 1970's:

The last time a Red appeared in a game as a catcher (not necessarily as a starter)..

100+ times in a season:   2012 Ryan Hanigan     (110)

110+ times in a season:   2012 Ryan Hanigan     (110)

120+ times in a season:   1999 Eddie Taubensee (124)

130+ times in a season:   1993 Joe Oliver           (133)

140+ times in a season:   1992 Joe Oliver           (141)

150+ times in a season:   1968 Johnny Bench     (154)

Bench had 607 plate appearances in 1968.  His main backup during the 70's Bill Plummer only had 1007 plate appearances in a 10 year career.

A roundabout way west..

If all goes well, I'll land in Phoenix about 11:00pm eastern time tonight.  That of course is after flying to Tampa first, but I guess in the world of air travel that somehow makes sense.

Yid's Greatest Hits

In my playing career I didn't hit much for power or average but now after all these years I finally figured out what I could do with a baseball bat.   Here's the first installment of what will be a daily feature on this blog.
