Reds pause furious chase for much-needed rest
Mark Sheldon, MLB.com
Despite being at less than full strength much of the season, the Reds are still right in the middle of the fight for the National League Central. They survived falling to six games under .500 on May 29 and stayed with it after being 8 1/2 games behind the first-place Brewers on June 20. They are now 1 1/2 games out in third place with a 51-44 record under first-year manager Bryan Price, after winning eight of their last 11 games before the break.
Reds' midseason moments
Kemp's open to trade if he's not playing everyday
Matt Kemp isn’t asking the Dodgers to trade him. But he isn’t necessarily opposed to the idea, either. The outfielder’s agent, former major-league pitcher Dave Stewart, told FOX Sports on Wednesday that Kemp again wants to be an everyday center fielder, something that isn’t in his immediate future with the Dodgers.
Down on the Farm
Keith Law's updated Top 50 prospect list: The Reds' top pitching prospect has had his problems with command and control this year, which isn't critical for a 21-year-old already pitching in AA. Still, the troubles probably push back his MLB debut date by at least a half season. Stephenson will pitch with a plus fastball and curveball, but there's some violence in his delivery that may be behind his command/control problems in 2014 -- although he had the same delivery last year and threw a lot more strikes. He'll need to develop his changeup and improve or restore his command to get back to that no. 1 starter ceiling.
Fox Sports: All Eyes on Dalton (Video roundtable)
In the end, it'll be on Dalton, who is playing with more on the line than he has in any of his previous three seasons. He can lead the Bengals to their first playoff victory since 1990, reverse the stigma that he can't win the big games and make himself some big money. Or he can fail to do any and all of that. He has the whole world in his hands ... let's see how he responds.
