GLENDALE, AZ - AUGUST 24: Wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr. #19 of the Arizona Cardinals is hit by cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick #27 of the Cincinnati Bengals during the first quarter of the NFL preseason game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Cincinnati Bengals at University of Phoenix Stadium on August 24, 2014 in Glendale, Arizona. My opening observations
*Bengals 1st team D looks ready for the opener.
*Terrance Newman 54-yard Pick 6 of Carson.....ah, brought back Carson memories. *Carson missed wide open Floyd deep down sideline/threw out bounds.
*Dalton incomplete after 9 in a row back to last week....wound up 13 of 21-157. *Bengals started with field position of 9, 7, 38, 17, 7, 5.
*3 and out opening drive Dalton/no points 1st time preseaon for Dalton.
*Rookie Will Clarke with a sack.
*How about Carson being only QB with 4,000+ yards 3 teams?
*Dre K big special teams hit.
*Burfict missed 3 days practice last week, then injured hamstring in 1st QT.
*I've wondered this since Hue Jackson was named OC, can they actually run the ball well enough? Things got going a little with Jeremy Hill.
*Rey M. with a 3rd down pass bat down.
*13 penalties for 122 yards?
*12 special teams penalties this preseason? James Wright 3 games row?
*Cobi Hamilton good, Cobi Hamilton not so good.
*I think Adam Jones gets better, as he gets older.
*Love the YAC by Sanu and AJ......+ Gresham 33 yards!
*Dalton hung tough on blitz to complete 3rd and 6 to Sanu.
*Hey, Shaun Porter with a pick to end game.
*Injuries: 3 carted off field in 4th QT, Trey Hopkins, James Wright, TJ Johnson.
*The Reds have won two straight games for the first time since August 5-7.
*Now 34-31 at home.
*Snapped a streak of seven straight defeats in games started by Alfredo Simon.
*Simon earned his first victory since July 9 against the Cubs...allowed one earned run or less in 7.0+ innings for the eighth time this season.
*Todd Frazier (2-for-4, HR, 2 R, RBI) team-leading 22nd home run, 3rd HR since All-Star break.
*Zack Cozart (3-for-4, 3B, 2 RBI), fourth three-hit game of the season and first multi-hit game since August 14 @ COL. 7th game this season with multiple RBI ... fourth triple this season, 3rd this month.
*Jay Bruce (2-for-4, 2 R) snapped a 13 at-bat hitless streak with a fourth inning infield single. Four multi-hit games in his last eight starts. 12th SB.

Give Joey Votto a break
Sports On Earth
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry last week when I heard Reds first baseman Joey Votto tell reporters he's on the disabled list because he's really hurt and truly injured. Has it come to this? Is this the new norm? Have we let the train run that far off the tracks? Or are the talk-radio nitwits and Twitter trolls now setting the agenda for the rest of us?

23-year old Oak Hills High School product Joel Bender was promoted from Low-A Dayton to Double-A Pensacola Saturday night. Bender tossed four innings, allowing 2 runs, before leaving with a blister on his pitching hand. The LHP was a 27th round pick of the Reds in 2010.
Jared Lorenzen's life-long battle with weight
ESPN The Magazine
I ASK LORENZEN: Do you wonder whether you would've had a better career if you'd been in better shape? "Maybe I'd still be playing," he says. "But I don't know how much better it could be."
For four years, he starred in the SEC. For three more, he got to step onto the field as an NFL player. He was so thrilled just to be in the league that every time the Giants played in a stadium he'd never been to, he took a ball in warm-ups and fired it into the upper deck. He hoped somebody up there would remember him.
Arena Bowl champs
Congrats to former UC QB Nick Davila. The Arena Football League Arizona Rattlers won their 3rd consecutive Arena Bowl title with a 72-32 win over the Cleveland Gladiators. Davila earned MVP honors, throwing for 237 yards and 8 TD's. The Gladiators, led by former UC Bearcat Dominic Goodman, had won a regular season record 17 games. Goodman had 7 catches for 60 yards and 3 TD's Saturday night.
I'm still gathering information to chose an English Premier League team to follow.
Peyton's Kings Hammer Red Hots went 2-1-0 in the Goalrilla Soccer Tournament over the weekend. The girls outscored their opponents 14-1 in three games.
My second favorite part of our yearly trip to this tournament in Cleves, is our visit to Sunnyside Grill. We swarmed the place after the first game on Saturday. Props to the staff, they got us in and out! I wish the owner would open a Sunnyside Grill in Independence. I think I'd invest in it!
