PHILADELPHIA, PA - MAY 16: Catcher Devin Mesoraco #39 of the Cincinnati Reds hits a three run home run in the top of the first inning against the Philadelphia Phillies on May 16, 2014 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images)

Final: Reds 3 Phillies 0 Boxscore
*Reds undefeated without Joey Votto. HERE is the update on Votto.
*Reds avoid falling 8 games out of 1st place for 1st time since September of 2011.
*Reds 16-13 since a 3-8 start, 19-21 overall.
*How about this for a tone setter?: Devin Mesoraco homered in his first at-bat after coming off the DL. He hit a 3-run HR in the first inning and that is all that Alfredo Simon needed.
*Simon bounced back from a subpar last outing, to go 7.2 innings of shutout baseball.
*Simon: 7.2, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K....one K from tying career high.
*Simon appeared to be making up pitches as he went.
*Manny Parra got a huge K Ryan Howard to end the 8th.
*Aroldis Chapman put 2 on in the 9th, but closed the door.
*Every time I heard Mesoraco talk I think about a guy that is becoming a spokesman and leader of this team.
*Billy Hamilton's 9th inning error (1st career) ended a streak of 10 straight games without an error by the Reds. Just the 13th error of the season.
*2 more hits for Brandon Phillips
*More hitting into tough luck for Ryan Ludwick.
*Todd Frazier's 14-game hit streak ended with an 0 for 4.
*Schumaker has a hit in each of his last 7 starts.
*If I were a betting man, and I am, I'd bet the Reds place Votto on the DL.
*If Votto's quad has bugged him for 2-3 weeks, a couple of days rest won't do it. Be safe, not sorry, put him on DL to rest it for 15 days.
*Friday’s Reds lineup was missing both Jay Bruce and Joey Votto for the first time since 9/20/12 vs Cubs, but they both pinch hit in that game at Wrigley Field. With Bruce on the disabled list and Votto in Cincinnati for a medical examination, Friday’s game was the first Reds game in which neither player appeared since 8/28/12 at Ari...courtesy Elias Sports Bureau.
*Reds pitching since Sunday: 5 games, 45 innings, 9 runs, 25 hits, 1.80 ERA, .162 BA.
Scoring
T1: Hamilton 1B, Schumaker 1B, Mesoraco 2-out, 3-run HR, 3-0 Reds.
