RHP Dylan Axelrod (#40) promoted to Reds, Homer Bailey to DL, Joey Votto transferred to 60-day DL.— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) August 16, 2014
Votto's 60-day transfer is procedural. Votto can now be removed from the 40-man roster in order to create a spot for Axelrod. Votto was originally placed on the DL on July 8, he last appeared in a game July 5. The 60-day DL is retroactive to July 5, meaning Votto would be eligible to return on September 4. If he actually returns this season is another question. As I said earlier in the week, I would shut him down for the season with an eye on getting him 100-percent for 2015. Number one rule: Always protect the investment.
