Votto to DL, Pena back, Hannahan to Dayton
Today the Reds placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday, 1B Joey Votto (distal quad strain, left knee) and returned from the paternity list C Brayan Pena (daughter Isabella).
This is Votto's second stint on the DL this season. From 5/16-6/9 the Reds went 11-12 while he recovered from the same injury...are 17-9 since his return.
Also today, the Reds sent to Class A Dayton on a rehabilitation assignment
IF Jack Hannahan (October 2013 right shoulder surgery).

Votto since coming off DL June 10:
*22 starts in 24 games. Reds 14-8 in starts. Game log HERE.
*.250-.354-.345-.699, 0 HR, 11 RBI in 99 plate appearance. 
*Last 11 games: 6 for last 37 (.162), 6 BB, OBP .279. 
*Last home run: May 10, 27 games and 101 plate appearances.
*Saturday: 0-4, 3 K...saw 14 pitches.
*His left leg has clearly been bothering him. The leg appears unstable and buckles from swing to swing. He has had a noticeable wince on swings over the last week.

Triple-A options
Neftali Soto is hitting .336 in 36 games at Louisville, including an 8-game hitting streak (12 for 31 .387)/
Donald Lutz is riding an 8 game hitting streak (9 for 30 .300).

People seem to forget the Reds medical staff was chosen as best in MLB in 2012.

The timeline

1st trip to DL
Votto was originally sidelined May 16 when the Reds opened a series in Philadelphia. He was finally placed on the DL May 21 with a strained quad. The Reds were 11-12 while Votto was out, losing one game to the Brewers in the NL Central standings. 
The Reds averaged 2.95 runs per game without Votto (68 runs/23 games). 
Votto originally missed 23 games, returned to play in 22 games and now returns to the DL.

About a month ago, Walt Jocketty told MLB Radio's Jim Bowden and Casey Stern that Joey Votto may not be 100-percent this season: "It's a strong possibility"

From Reds: The MRI on Joey Votto’s left knee indicated a distal quadriceps strain. He was examined today in Cincinnati and will miss tonight’s game in Philadelphia.
