Cincy Children's Treating Patient With AFM Symptoms

Cincinnati Children's Hospital

(Cincinnati) - Doctors at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center say they're treating a child with symptoms of Acute Flaccid Myelitis.

The Centers for Disease Control says the illness can cause polio-like symptoms in children.

It's a rare but serious condition that can affect gray matter in the spinal cord and cause muscles and reflexes to weaken.

Most patients with the illness are children. Some symptoms can include facial droop, difficulty moving eyes and slurred speech.

Children's Hospital officials say they don't think it's contagious.
