Orb won the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

Orb entered the race as a co-favorite at 6-1 odds.

Golden Soul finished second while Revolutionary, the other co-favorite, was third.

Orb was trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, who earned his first Derby win. The jockey was Joel Rosario.

The purse was $2,199,800, with $1,439,800 to the winner. Orb paid $12.80 to win.

The condition of the track was steadily downgraded to sloppy. Heavy rollers went over the dirt surface to pack the top layer and prevent water from seeping into the base, but it still resembled creamy peanut butter.

A track spokesman said a quarter of inch had fallen by mid-afternoon, though it had stopped by the time the race started.

Fans huddled under covered sections of the grandstand and donned plastic ponchos over suits and dresses. Umbrellas were banned because of safety concerns.
