( CINCINNATI ) - A Cincinnati spine surgeon has been charged with fraudulently billing Medicare and other benefit programs for millions after subjecting patients to unnecessary operations.

Federal Agents arrested Atiq Durrani on Thursday on charges of making false statements in health care matters and health care fraud. He could face up to 25 years in prison if he is convicted on both.

Federal authorities allege that many patients actually ended up with worse neck and back pain after he had performed unneeded spinal surgeries.

Durrani returns to court Aug. 19.
